Sedation

How we can help you

Is Sedation For You?

If you are someone who has felt fear when going to the dentist it helps to be sedated.  This way you can feel more relaxed, and may even drift off to sleep at times, but will be easy to awaken. Additionally, we recommend it for patients who need to have a lot of dentistry done at one time. You’ll be more comfortable during the process and we will be able to get the work completed.

What is Sedation?

Going through a dental procedure can sometimes be scary, but you have nothing to fear! We use a variety of sedation dentistry techniques to help you feel more relaxed when going through a procedure. At Taylor Dentistry, we offer two types of conscious sedation:

Oral Conscious Sedation:

When choosing oral sedation, you take a sedative tablet to help you relax. The dentist will prescribe a personalized dosage and check in multiple times throughout the procedure to make sure you’re still feeling good. Unlike general anesthesia, oral conscious sedation leaves you fully awake and aware of your surroundings. You won’t sleep through your dental work, but you will feel deeply relaxed and comfortable. You can even get up and walk to the bathroom completely on your own!
You probably won’t remember much about your treatment and the best part is that it’ll be over before you know it! This is perfect for patients with dental anxiety or anyone who needs to get a lot of work done at one time. Because oral sedation temporarily affects your memory and motor skills, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure.

Intravenous or IV Conscious Sedation:

Unlike many dental practices in Kentucky, Taylor Dentistry offers IV Conscious Sedation. With intravenous sedation, we inject the sedative through a small plastic tube into your bloodstream, through your vein. This way, it acts faster in your system and can be given to you if needed, during the procedure. While all sedation patients are closely monitored with special equipment, IV sedation requires more attention than oral sedation.
The hallmark of conscious sedation is that patients respond to direction, breath easily on their own, and don’t remember much of what happened. Both oral and IV sedation achieve that.
Also, it’s important to remember that conscious sedation is not the same as general anesthesia. With conscious sedation, you feel comfortable, sleepy, and relaxed, while with general anesthesia you are completely unconscious and need assistance breathing.  This is often done in a hospital setting for surgery.

Are you at any risk with sedation?

You should not worry about getting sedated. Different from general anesthesia, sedation does not make you completely unaware or in need of equipment to help you breathe. The purpose of sedation is to induce a feeling of restfulness, removing your anxiety about the procedure. At Taylor Dentistry, we will meticulously review your health history to ensure safety. You will have an experienced professional that will monitor your vital signs while you’re sedated. This ensures you’ll be relaxed and restful, so you can complete the process feeling comfortable.
